CODE OF CONDUCT

CSA COMMUNITY STANDARDS & CODE OF CONDUCT

The Center for Spiritual Awakening (“CSA”) is committed to cultivating a respectful, safe, inclusive, and spiritually supportive environment for all who gather here.

These Community Standards exist to protect the well-being of participants, the integrity of the community, and the shared use of CSA spaces and programs. CSA welcomes sincere inquiry, diverse perspectives, and authentic participation while maintaining clear expectations around safety, boundaries, and respectful conduct.

This Code of Conduct applies to all staff, ministers, volunteers, members, renters, facilitators, guests, attendees, and participants present on CSA premises or participating in CSA-sponsored activities, including online spaces and events where applicable.

CSA reserves the right to take reasonable and appropriate action to protect the safety, integrity, operations, and well-being of the community.

1. CORE COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS

All individuals participating in CSA activities or present on CSA premises are expected to:
  • Treat others with dignity, respect, and consideration
  • Respect interpersonal, emotional, physical, and spiritual boundaries
  • Engage in honest, respectful, and non-coercive communication
  • Support a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment
  • Conduct themselves in a lawful, safe, and non-disruptive manner
  • Respect shared spaces, facilities, volunteers, staff, neighbors, and the broader community
  • Cooperate with reasonable requests from CSA staff, ministers, volunteers, or event leaders related to safety, operations, or community well-being

CSA encourages thoughtful dialogue, authentic inquiry, and respectful disagreement. Differences in belief, perspective, or spiritual orientation may be explored in ways that remain constructive and non-disruptive.

2. PROHIBITED CONDUCT

The following behaviors are inconsistent with CSA community standards and may result in intervention, removal from activities or premises, suspension, or denial of future participation:

Harassment & Abuse
  • Harassment, intimidation, threats, stalking, or abusive behavior
  • Repeated unwanted contact or attention
  • Bullying, coercion, humiliation, or manipulation
  • Retaliation against any individual who raises a concern or reports misconduct

Discrimination
Discrimination, exclusion, or harassment based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, spiritual belief, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or other protected status is prohibited.

Sexual Misconduct & Boundary Violations
  • Unwanted sexual attention, contact, or behavior
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Sexual harassment or sexually explicit conduct
  • Boundary violations involving emotional intimacy, personal disclosure, or misuse of trust

Spiritual Manipulation & Misuse of Influence
  • Exploitation through claimed spiritual authority, insight, or status
  • Manipulative use of spiritual teachings, practices, or roles
  • Pressuring others into personal, relational, financial, ideological, or spiritual decisions
  • Targeting vulnerable individuals for dependency, control, or undue influence

Disruptive Conduct
  • Persistent or substantial disruption of services, gatherings, programs, or spiritual practices
  • Aggressive confrontation or repeated ideological conflict that interferes with the community environment
  • Hostile, coercive, or intentionally disruptive interference with CSA programs or activities

CSA recognizes that sincere disagreement and emotional expression are part of authentic community life. Intervention is generally based on conduct, safety concerns, repeated disruption, or boundary violations rather than differences of opinion alone.

3. SAFETY & LEGAL COMPLIANCE

All individuals must:
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws
  • Follow posted safety rules, occupancy limits, and emergency procedures
  • Maintain clear emergency exits and safe access pathways
  • Use facilities and equipment only as intended or approved

The following are prohibited on CSA premises except where otherwise required by law:
  • Weapons of any kind
  • Illegal drugs or unlawful activity
  • Unsafe conduct that poses a risk to people or property
  • Tampering with safety systems, AV equipment, or restricted-access areas

CSA may contact emergency services, law enforcement, or outside support resources when reasonably necessary to address safety concerns.

4. WELL-BEING, DISTRESS & COMMUNITY SAFETY

CSA seeks to respond compassionately to individuals experiencing emotional, psychological, spiritual, or behavioral distress. At the same time, CSA must maintain appropriate boundaries and a reasonably safe environment for the broader community.

Conduct that creates a significant safety concern, repeated disruption, inability to maintain appropriate boundaries, or substantial interference with community functioning may require intervention, participation limitations, temporary removal, referral to outside support resources, or other protective measures.

CSA is not a clinical treatment facility, crisis-response organization, or emergency care provider.

5. RESPECT FOR SPACE & PROPERTY

CSA facilities are shared spiritual and community spaces. All individuals are expected to:
  • Use spaces only as approved and intended
  • Treat CSA property, furnishings, equipment, and grounds with care
  • Maintain reasonable noise levels appropriate to the setting
  • Leave spaces clean, orderly, and free of damage
  • Respect restricted-access or staff-only areas

Damage, misuse, theft, or excessive cleanup needs may result in financial responsibility and/or loss of access privileges.

6. SPIRITUAL PRACTICES, PRIVACY & COMMUNITY SENSITIVITY

CSA seeks to foster an atmosphere of openness, contemplation, respect, and sincere inquiry.
Accordingly:
  • Disruptive behavior during services, meditation, workshops, prayer, or spiritual practices is prohibited
  • Proselytizing, aggressive persuasion, or coercive recruitment is not permitted
  • Participants are expected to respect the privacy and discretion of personal sharing and vulnerable expression to the extent reasonably possible
  • Confidential or sensitive information shared within community settings should not be publicly disclosed without consent except where required for safety or legal reasons

CSA recognizes that spiritual communities often involve meaningful personal exploration and therefore places a high value on consent, discretion, respect, and healthy boundaries.

7. MEDIA, RECORDING & PRIVACY

Recording, photography, livestreaming, and media activity must comply with CSA policies and applicable agreements.

Participants must:
  • Respect privacy, consent, and confidentiality expectations
  • Avoid recording individuals in ways that violate applicable law or CSA standards
  • Comply with requests related to restricted recording areas or private gatherings

Certain public events may be photographed, livestreamed, or recorded. CSA will make reasonable efforts to provide notice where such recording is occurring.

8. EVENTS INVOLVING MINORS

When minors are present:
  • Enhanced care, supervision, and safety expectations apply
  • Inappropriate language, conduct, or exposure is prohibited
  • Parents, guardians, facilitators, and event organizers are responsible for appropriate supervision and safeguarding
  • Adults must maintain appropriate boundaries with minors at all times

Additional child safety policies may apply to certain programs or events.

9. REPORTING CONCERNS & COMMUNITY RESPONSE

Individuals are encouraged to report concerns involving safety, harassment, misconduct, boundary violations, discrimination, or significant community conflict to CSA leadership, staff, ministers, designated volunteers, or board representatives.

Reports may be made verbally or in writing.

CSA will review concerns in good faith and may:
  • Gather additional information
  • Speak with involved parties
  • Seek informal or restorative resolution where appropriate
  • Establish behavioral expectations or boundaries
  • Limit participation in certain activities
  • Require temporary separation between individuals
  • Suspend or terminate participation or access where necessary

CSA may implement interim measures while concerns are being reviewed when reasonably necessary to protect safety, well-being, or community functioning.

CSA will make reasonable efforts to respect privacy and confidentiality during the review process, though absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed where safety, legal obligations, or community protection require disclosure.

10. ENFORCEMENT & CONSEQUENCES

CSA reserves the right to determine appropriate responses to conduct concerns in alignment with its mission, values, safety obligations, legal responsibilities, and community well-being.

Responses may include:
  • Informal conversation or verbal guidance
  • Written behavioral expectations
  • Mediation or facilitated dialogue
  • Temporary participation restrictions
  • Removal from events or premises
  • Suspension from programs or activities
  • Denial of future access to CSA property or events
  • Involvement of emergency services or law enforcement where necessary

CSA will generally seek proportionate, context-sensitive, and compassionate responses where appropriate.

However, CSA may act immediately when it determines that safety, legal obligations, or community well-being require prompt intervention.

Violation of these Community Standards may also constitute a breach of applicable rental agreements, volunteer agreements, or participation expectations.
